How To Prepare For Your First Pilates Class

Posted on

Are you ready to start your first pilates class? If you're new to this popular fitness class, take a look at the simple steps to prepare for your first session.

What Should You Bring with You?

In most cases, you won't need to bring much. The instructor or fitness training center will have the equipment you need for this class. The only exception is a mat. Ask the instructor what type of mat is best for the class (or if you really do need to bring your own) before you invest in a new one. Along with a mat, you should also bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated during and after class.

What Should You Wear?

Comfortable workout/fitness-style clothing is the best choice for pilates classes. Even though baggy sweats may provide you with an extra sense of comfort, form-fitting workout-wear is the best option. Form-fitting clothing allows the instructor to see your body (for corrections) and can reduce the risks of slip and fall injuries.

Even though you may want to wear clothing that fits your form, avoid anything that's too small, binds, causes physical discomfort, or may not cover you completely.

What Should You Leave at Home?

Avoid accidental injuries and leave jewelry at home. A sharp edge of a necklace or bracelet could cut your skin, and dangling baubles could get caught in the equipment. Other items you won't need during class include your cell phone, shoes (wear these to class, but remove them after you arrive), and clothing with metal embellishments, zippers, or anything else that poses an injury risk.

What Health Information Should You Tell the Instructor Before Class?

The instructor needs to know about any medical conditions or injuries before the first class. If you're pregnant or have a heart condition, respiratory problem, diabetes, are recovering from a recent surgery, or have a chronic/lingering injury, your instructor may need to tailor the workout to fit your needs. Consult with your doctor or medical provider before you start this, or any other, fitness class.

You're ready to start a new road to physical fitness—with pilates. Now that you know what to bring (and what not to bring), wear, and tell the instructor before your first class, you're ready to take the next step. If you still have questions, or have questions that are specific to the class, talk to the instructor before you begin.
